Long Beach is indeed a special place, and there have been many funky things going on here over the years, but there has yet to be a 100% funk festival in the LBC. That's why the LBFF has manifested, to bring an event of uncut funk magnitude to Long Beach.
This is not going to be a jazz funk fest. This is not a hip hop funk fest. This is not going to be an old skool show. It's not a rock festival with a few funky bands. This is going to be all funk and nuttin but the funk. This is going to be a festival to bring together funk fans old and new, to show where funk came from and where it's going.
Our goal is to bring the funk music community together (musicians and fans) and invoke the spirit of the great 70's funk fests, and to help nurture and develop funk's acceptance and acknowledgment as a complete North American musical genre. Much in the way jazz and blues are considered "American art forms", funk is American music too, our music, and has influenced countless other genres, musicians, and people around the world.
The Long Beach Funk Fest will be a green-driven festival, involving green sponsors and educating in ways to live with less impact on our environment. We are working to have the bulk of support come from green companies and organizations. The Long Beach Funk Fest will also help to raise funds towards music education in Long Beach. This will be a community-based event, involving the community and giving back to the community. This event is being sponsored by the DLBA (Downtown Long Beach Associates), Long Beach Redevelopment Agency, and the Arts Council for Long Beach.
As of now, we are not accepting open submissions from bands for the booking on the fest. The lineup has been hand picked to reflect the mission of the LBFF. We are working on some pre parties and after parties to make a weekend of funk for everyone, so plan on staying in Long Beach for the weekend. There's so much to do here besides attending the festival too. We are also currently seeking sponsors, donors, volunteers, etc. for the event. We are mostly seeking green sponsors, but if it relates to funk, then we can talk!
